Newsweek: This Time, Sarah Palin’s Got A Point

Monday, February 22, 2010 0 Responses
From the din of the 24-hour news cycle, a rule has taken shape: if it's a bare-knuckle, low-down tussle you're after, the best bet is to pick on Sarah Palin. Palin has made an art of umbrage, and as her political future hinges on maintaining maximum visibility, no slight, real or perceived, is going to escape the Barracuda's wrath. Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane knew this when he approved a joke in a recent episode in which Chris dates a girl with Down syndrome named Ellen (played by Andrea Fay Friedman.) Over dinner, Chris asks Ellen what her parents do for a living. "My dad is an accountant, and my mom is the former governor of Alaska," says Ellen, an obvious reference to the fact that Palin has a son with Down syndrome. At that moment, a frantic call probably came in on the Palin Phone. There was defamation afoot, and it must be stopped at all costs. […]
The problem with the conversation surrounding the Family Guy episode is that it presupposes that people fall into one of two categories: those who think the joke was funny because they weren't offended by it, and those who think the joke wasn't funny because they were. I didn't find the joke funny, not because it was insensitive to people with Down syndrome or to Sarah Palin, but because it just wasn't funny. Like, as a joke. Plenty of criticisms have been lobbed at Family Guy, from the quality of the animation, to its reliance on interchangeable, inorganic cutaway gags (see South Park’s two-part take down, “Cartoon Wars”) but the Palin joke is a perfect example of the show's major shortcoming. The MacFarlane sensibility puts a premium on being offensive, and that's fine when the jokes are soundly constructed, but too often Family Guy jokes aren't clever or well written, they're just shocking. To some people (me included, at times) the shock value is enough to inspire some uncomfortable tittering, but jokes like that don't stand up to scrutiny. If you take two seconds to think about them, you realize it wasn't that funny to begin with, and it certainly doesn't work on a subsequent viewing, when you're expecting it. [...]
Simply restating a fact in a different context, like the fact that Palin has a child with Down syndrome, isn't funny, even if you dislike Palin or disagree with her politics. There's a lot to like about Family Guy; the arcane pop-culture references kill me, as does anything that features a talking baby. But if MacFarlane is going to climb into Palin's sandbox, he's going to have to equip himself with much sharper material.

Sarah Palin Is One Tough Mother

Thursday, February 18, 2010 1 Response
Sarah Palin is dismissed by some on both the Left and the Right as a lightweight. She's supposedly wet behind the ears because she's rarely traveled abroad or served as a privileged United States senator, which consists mostly of ordering lackeys around. Of course, Palin is way too pretty (and a non-Ivy-Leaguer besides) to have an I.Q. anywhere near Obama's.
It's astonishing what these critics continually ignore: that Palin is a mom -- not once, but five times over. How can this inconvenient truth be so easily dismissed? Five children -- count them -- including a special-needs boy with Down Syndrome. […]
Looking at Palin's slender frame, it's hard to imagine her actually doing this not once, not twice, but five times. She was wiping spills and her kids' mouths at the same time as she was cleaning up Alaska. Of course, being a frontier woman, Palin can do it all.
Palin can do practically anything because this is how her parents raised her. […]
Obama, in contrast, has spent his 48 years kvetching. A day rarely goes by during which Obama doesn't complain about George Bush or having to lower himself to talk to Republicans.
Every hardship is blamed on outside forces. Obama's parents abandoned him because of racism; he was benched from a high school sport due to injustice; his friends, like Henry Louis Gates, Jr., are treated unfairly.
And because of all this alleged persecution, liberals view Obama as the tough guy. In many people's messed up minds, the angry and aggrieved are viewed as the formidable ones.
Meanwhile, Palin just glides by like a majestic bird in flight. She's called a c--t, Trailer Trash Barbie, and a moron, but she just keeps going, like the fiercest prizefighter. Palin takes the punches, gets up, and keeps on rocking -- always with her effervescent smile.
There is nothing lightweight about her, our Alaskan Amazon, who once gave a speech in Dallas while in the throes of labor with Trig. Did you hear that? I'm talking labor, which I understand is like having one of those prizefighters throwing punches from deep inside. Are you listening, the insufferable Robert Gibbs?
Fool: Does it really matter if, at the time, she had some notes scribbled on her palm?
Can you imagine the carryings-on, the mass hysteria, if people like Obama or Gibbs or Maureen Dowd had to actually birth a human being? Would they even survive to tell the tale?  […]
Can anyone in his right mind say the same thing about Obama?

Sarah Palin To Obama: Stimulus Bill Anniversary Proves Not-So-Stimulating

Wednesday, February 17, 2010 0 Responses
One year ago today, President Obama signed a nearly trillion dollar stimulus package and handed our children the bill. What did we get for that massive price tag? Many promises, but the promises have proven false. On this stimulus anniversary, Washington needs to hear our message that Americans expect, and deserve, better.
Americans were promised the stimulus would keep unemployment under 8%. It’s now well over that. We were promised it would be targeted and pork-free. It’s been loaded with pork, corporate giveaways, union bosses’ goodies, and other manners of waste. We were promised there would be no fraud, but our government now tells us it can’t even verify the eligibility of people applying for the $325 billion worth of stimulus tax provisions. We were promised there would be strict oversight, but billions of dollars apparently were allotted to congressional districts that don’t even exist. We were promised it would provide “green jobs” for Americans, but 80% of the $2 billion they spent on alternative energy went to purchase wind turbines built in China! We were promised it would help state governments weather the recession, but states receiving the stimulus bait will be in worse fiscal shape now because local governments will be on the hook for new unfunded mandates and continuation of government programs they couldn’t afford in the first place – as many of us governors warned state legislatures.
One year later, we see plainly that the stimulus was not a well-thought out plan. It hasn’t revived our economy; instead the debt-ridden package will prove to be a drag on our economy. It hasn’t put us on the path to a better future; instead it’s unfairly mortgaged our children’s future and stolen opportunities from them. It hasn’t strengthened us; instead it endangers our freedom and security by making us even more beholden to foreign lenders. The legacy of the stimulus isn’t jobs or economic growth – it’s more dangerous debt.
But there is hope! And this hope lies in draining the swamp in D.C. and sending Commonsense Conservatives to Washington who understand the need for fiscal restraint. Those who are willing to rein in spending, respect Constitutional limits, and repeal the stimulus should get our support, and those who have been part of the problem should be replaced.
In this election year, we’ll see many daring Davids take on entrenched Goliaths. Just one of these many brave souls is a northern Wisconsin patriot named Sean Duffy. He’s running in Wisconsin’s 7th congressional district against a liberal Goliath who’s been in Congress over 40 years now and has the dubious distinction of being the author of the stimulus bill. To commemorate the anniversary of the signing of the stimulus, Sean Duffy is holding a fundraising “money bomb” for his campaign so he can replace the career politician who drafted this government-bloating behemoth.
If you’re frustrated about the waste in the stimulus bill, please support a solid fiscal conservative who will work to repeal it. Please visit Sean Duffy’s website and help him help us correct the mistakes of this past year.
On this first anniversary of the stimulus, let’s send a message to the big-spenders in Washington by helping Sean Duffy unseat the author of the stimulus. Let’s put government back on our side and get to work revitalizing America!
