Sarah Palin Rolls Into D.C. — On A Motorcycle!

Friday, May 27, 2011 0 Responses
Dontcha’ know, Sarah Palin is coming to town this weekend, and you may see her cruising the streets of D.C. on the back of a hog. […]
“As far as I know, she is trying to rent a motorcycle, so she can ride with her husband,” said Nancy Regg, a spokeswoman for Rolling Thunder.
Gregg says the tentative plan is for Palin to join up with the ride at the Pentagon at 7 a.m. The ride kicks off at noon, and hundreds of bikers will snake through D.C. to the event’s main stage, which will be between the Reflecting Pool and the Korean War Veterans Memorial on the Mall. The program is scheduled to kick off at 1 p.m.
Gregg said Palin is currently not scheduled to speak at the event and watchers should not expect any type of “political statement” from Palin during Rolling Thunder.
Sarah Palin’s aides have not responded yet to a request for comment on her plans.
The Rolling Thunder appearance is Palin’s first stop on a nationwide bus tour she’s dubbed “One Nation.” […]
Hmmm....We’ll try to catch her for a better answer on her motorcycle.

Message From Governor Palin: Looking ahead to 2012

Wednesday, April 27, 2011 0 Responses
I am so thankful for the American patriots across our nation who voted this past November to bring Congress back to the ideals of our Founding Fathers.
The White House and Congress heard loud-and-clear that Americans don’t want cradle-to-grave government control of our lives. We don’t want government bureaucrats deciding what kind of light bulbs we should use, what kind of cars we should drive, and which doctors can and can’t care for us and our families. And we don’t want our president continuing to manipulate the U.S. energy supply. What we want are the freedom and opportunities to make a better life for ourselves in this most exceptional nation on earth.
Taking back control of the House last year was only the first step. Now you and I must fix our eyes on 2012. Our goal is to take back the White House and the Senate. We must take back control of Congress and the White House in order to undo the damage done by the disastrous Obama/Pelosi/Reid agenda.
I’ll be supporting commonsense conservative candidates in crucial off-year elections and doing all that I can to ramp up our preparations for 2012. And I promise to join you in holding new members of Congress accountable to ensure that they live up to their campaign promises to rein in out-of-control government spending and to repeal and replace the massive, burdensome, and unwanted Obamacare bill.

I know what a sacred trust it is to be asking you to contribute your hard-earned money to SarahPAC. I take that trust very seriously, especially in these hard economic times. But there’s so much at stake now -– we are the most powerful country on earth and the world is better off because of us. Yet our own president and our liberal Senate seem determined to weaken us.
It’s imperative that you and I fight to end deficit spending - protect our free market entrepreneurial system - drill here and drill now for responsible energy independence - secure our borders - and strengthen our national defense to stand up to Islamic extremists and other enemies of America.
If you want to help me lay crucial groundwork, please send your best gift possible to SarahPAC today.
Thank you for joining me in the fight to keep America the country we know and love!
With an Alaskan Heart,

47 Reasons Governor Palin Is Qualified to Be President --Happy B-day Gov--

Friday, February 11, 2011 1 Response

Send Governor Palin a Birthday Gift: Donate to SarahPAC

One of the many memes the GOP establishment, the Left and the media try to stick to Governor Palin is that she is unqualified to be President if she chooses to run. With today being her 47th birthday, it’s odd that so many people think she is younger than thirty-five years old! So, in honor of her birthday, I’d like to share 47 reasons Governor Palin is qualified to be President above and beyond constitutional requirements. In no particular order:
  1. She won’t perjure herself by taking the Presidential oath of office like many of her potential opponents.
  2. She has 9 years of executive experience, more than 3 times as much as the current President. As Governor, she held the 2nd most powerful gubernatorial office in the country.
  3. She knows how to budget. In her years as Governor, she reduced the state budget 9.5% over her predecessor and put $5 billion in state savings.
  4. She reduced federal earmark requests 80% as Governor over her predecessor, recognizing the need for fiscal responsibility at both state and national levels.
  5. She’s a proven reformer. She strove to break the bonds between Alaskan politicians and oil companies and passed sweeping ethics reform.
  6. She believes in true governmental transparency. As Governor, she put the state checkbook online to allow constituents to know how and where the state was spending revenue. During the negotiations of one of the cornerstones of her administration, the Alaska Gasline Inducement Act (AGIA), all proposals were made available for public consumption.
  7. In signing the AGIA legislation and the progress that continues to this day, she brought a transcontinental pipeline project from Alaska to the Lower 48 further than 30 years of previous administrations. AGIA is the largest private sector infrastructure project in North American history.
  8. She believes in oversight not over regulation for energy development. She opened an Petroleum Integrity Office to oversee energy development in Alaska.
  9. She believes in an all-of-the-above approach to energy development, including opening up ANWR, on shore drilling, off shore drilling, natural gas, coal, nuclear, and renewables.
  10. She understand the effects of quantitative easing will have on the economy in general and on commodity prices specifically.
  11. She would have the intestinal fortitude to actually take on reformation of entitlement programs to help derail the bullet train to bankruptcy.
  12. For the role of the presidency, the Constitution devotes the majority of its text to the role of commander-in-chief. Governor Palin would take this role seriously as displayed by her commitment to America’s military and her desire for a strong national defense.
  13. As part of her commitment to strong national defense, she criticized the Obama administration for making cuts to missile defense, and she stands strongly against the START treaty between Russia and America.
  14. She has been firmly against Obamacare from the beginning of legislative talks and strongly supports repeal. She truly sees America as an exceptional nation because of its people.
  15. She praises what makes America unique; she doesn’t apologize.
  16. She puts principles above party and political expediency.
  17. She has stood strongly for securing America’s borders, as shown by her support of Arizona’s immigration law.
  18. She is strongly pro-life–a welcomed far cry from the pro-abortion president in history now occupying the White House.
  19. She stand supports human rights, particularly speaking out against the human rights abuses in China, Iran, and amongst peoples who embrace Sharia law.
  20. With regards to foreign policy, she has a far better grasp situation in Egypt with regards to the potential of the Muslim brotherhood’s involvement in a new government and Mubarak’s plans better than members of President Obama’s intelligence team, Leon Panetta and James Clapper.
  21. She actually had private sector experience that would enable her to understand what it takes to make payroll and budget with in one’s means, unlike the majority of members of the Obama administration.
  22. She’s a strong advocate for the 10th amendment, showing she understand not only the balance of powers between the branches of the federal government, but also between the federal and state governments.
  23. She shows grace under fire. In spite of having accusations of blood libel launched against her, she stood strongly and gracefully for the victims of the shooting in Tucson and for the freedom of open political discourse.
  24. Beyond her political achievements and strong conservative stances, she has character. In spite of a two and a half yeas of a constant barrage of ethics complaints, smears, lies, and media misrepresentation, she has remained strong.
  25. She has the ability to communicate with people across the spectrums of age, education, and background. She just as comfortable speaking to with businesspeople in Hong Kong as she is speaking to GOP supporters in California or pro-life advocates in Indiana.
  26. She is stands strongly with America’s allies, like Israel.
  27. The American people stand with her on the issues more than they do the current president.
  28. She has already taken on the Establishment in Alaska and won.
  29. She lives America’s motto–in God we trust.
  30. She ticks off all the right people.
  31. She believes the shrinking government expands individual freedom.
  32. She understands the threats of country like Iran.
  33. She understands the difference between separation of church and state and separation of God and state.
  34. As Governor, she forward funded education, giving schools greater flexibility and predictability in their planning.
  35. She was prescient of the Obama administration’s plans and policies as far back as September of 2008, and she can effectively reverse these policies.
  36. She is a firm advocate of freedom of speech, even standing up for those who have denigrated her.
  37. She knows how to respond to the largest environmental disaster in our nation’s history, unlike our current president.
  38. She believes America needs to restored, not fundamentally transformed.
  39. She has the optimism of Reagan with the tenacity of Thatcher.
  40. With Governor Palin as President, the era of big government would be gone.
  41. She doesn’t believe in identity politics or put people in a box.She sees individual Americans, not voting blocs.
  42. She is an American first, conservative second, and Republican third.
  43. She speaks from the heart, not a teleprompter.
  44. She is a leader, not a politician.
  45. She believes in developing a strong work ethic.
  46. She learns from others who have been at the other end of the political and religious spectrum–Reagan was a former Democrat, Thomas Sowell is a former Marxist, and C.S. Lewis was a former atheist
  47. She’s not afraid to go rogue.

Governor Palin Gave Over $500,000 To Candidates (Last Day For Signed Copy Of America By Heart)

Wednesday, December 01, 2010 0 Responses
Sarah Palin gave at least $507,000 to candidates and political causes in 2010 as she earned a reputation as kingmaker and raised her profile ahead of a possible presidential run.
The biggest chunk of that money, about $306,500, was doled out in the month leading to the Nov. 2 general election by her political action committee, SarahPAC, filings with the Federal Election Commission show.
Her latest filing Tuesday showed contributions of nearly $465,000 between Oct. 14 and Nov. 22. During that period, Palin gave $244,000 to conservative candidates, state Republican parties and ballot fights.
Palin gave $5,000 each to Renee Ellmers successful recount effort in a North Carolina U.S. House race and Joe Miller's legal fight in Alaska's still-disputed U.S. Senate race.
For the year, she raised more than $3 million. She ended the latest reporting period with nearly $1.3 million on hand.

Gov Sarah Palin: An Open Letter to Republican Freshmen Members of Congress

Saturday, November 13, 2010 0 Responses
Welcome to all Republican Freshmen and congratulations!

Congratulations to all of you for your contribution to this historic election, and for the contributions I am certain you will make to our country in the next two years. Your victory was hard fought, and the success belongs entirely to you and the staff and volunteers who spent countless hours working for this chance to put government back on the side of the people. Now you will come to Washington to serve your nation and leave your mark on history by reining in government spending, preserving our freedoms at home, and restoring America’s leadership abroad. Some of you have asked for my thoughts on how best to proceed in the weeks and months ahead and how best to advance an agenda that can move our country forward. I have a simple answer: stick to the principles that propelled your campaigns. When you take your oath to support and defend our Constitution and to faithfully discharge the duties of your office, remember that present and future generations of “We the People” are counting on you to stand by that oath. Never forget the people who sent you to Washington. Never forget the trust they placed in you to do the right thing.

The task before you is daunting because so much damage has been done in the last two years, but I believe you have the chance to achieve great things.

Republicans campaigned on a promise to rein in out-of-control government spending and to repeal and replace the massive, burdensome, and unwanted health care law President Obama and the Democrat Congress passed earlier this year in defiance of the will of the majority of the American people. These are promises that you must keep. Obamacare is a job-killer, a regulatory nightmare, and an enormous unfunded mandate. The American people don’t want it and we can’t afford it. We ask, with all due respect, that you remember your job will be to work to replace this legislation with real reform that relies on free market principles and patient-centered policies. The first step is, of course, to defund Obamacare.

You’ve also got to be deadly serious about cutting the deficit. Despite what some would like us to believe, tax cuts didn’t get us into the mess we’re in. Government spending did. Tough decisions need to be made about reducing government spending. The longer we put them off, the worse it will get. We need to start by cutting non-essential spending. That includes stopping earmarks (because abuse of the earmark process created the "gateway-drug" that allowed backroom deals and bloated budgets), canceling all further spending on the failed Stimulus program, and rolling back non-discretionary spending to 2008 levels. You can do more, but this would be a good start.

In order to avert a fiscal disaster, we will also need to check the growth of spending on our entitlement programs. That will be a huge challenge, but it must be confronted head on. We must do it in a humane way that honors the government’s current commitments to our fellow Americans while also keeping faith with future generations. We cannot rob from our children and grandchildren’s tomorrow to pay for our unchecked spending today. Beyond that, we need to reform the way Congress conducts business in order to make it procedurally easier to cut spending than to increase it. We need to encourage zero-based budgeting practices in D.C. like the kind fiscally conservative mayors and governors utilize to balance their budgets and reduce unnecessary spending.

There in the insulated and isolated Beltway you will be far removed from the economic pain felt by so many Americans who are out of work. Please remember that if we want real job growth, we must create a stable investment climate by ending the tidal wave of overly burdensome regulations coming out of Washington. Businesses need certainty – and freedom that incentivizes competition – to grow and expand our workforce.

The last thing our small businesses need is tax hikes. It falls to the current Democrat-controlled Congress to decide on the future of the 2001 and 2003 tax cuts. If it does not permanently renew all of them, you should move quickly to do so in the new Congress. It would remove from households and businesses the threat of a possible $3.8 trillion tax hike hitting all Americans at the worst possible moment, with our economy struggling to recover from a deep recession! You must continue to remind Democrats that the people they are dismissing as “rich” are the small business owners who create up to 70% of all jobs in this country!

Another issue of vital importance is border security. Americans expect our leadership in Washington to act now to secure our borders. Don’t fall for the claims of those who suggest that we can’t secure our borders until we simultaneously deal with the illegal immigrants already here. Let’s deal with securing the border first. That alone is a huge challenge that has been ignored for far too long.

On foreign policy and national security, I urge you to stick to our principles: strong defense, free trade, nurturing allies, and steadfast opposition to America’s enemies.  We are the most powerful country on earth and the world is better off because of it.  Our president does not seem to understand this. If we withdraw from the world, the world will become a much more dangerous place. You must push President Obama to finish the job right in Iraq and get the job done in Afghanistan, otherwise we who are war-weary will forever question why America’s finest are sent overseas to make the ultimate sacrifice with no clear commitment to victory from those who send them. You should be prepared to stand with the President against Iran’s nuclear aspirations using whatever means necessary to ensure the mullahs in Tehran do not get their hands on nuclear weapons. And you can stand with the Iranian people who oppose the tyrannical rule of the clerics and concretely support their efforts to win their freedom – even if the President does not.

You need to say no to cutting the necessities in our defense budget when we are engaged in two wars and face so many threats – from Islamic extremists to a nuclear Iran to a rising China. As Ronald Reagan said, “We will always be prepared, so we may always be free.” You will also have the opportunity to push job-creating free trade agreements with allies like Colombia and South Korea. You can stand with allies like Israel, not criticize them. You can let the President know what you believe – Jerusalem is the capital of Israel, not a settlement. And for those of you joining the United States Senate, don’t listen to desperate politically-motivated arguments about the need for hasty consideration of the “New START” treaty.  Insist on your right to patient and careful deliberation of New START to address very real concerns about verification, missile defense, and modernization of our nuclear infrastructure. No New START in the lame duck!

You can stand against misguided proposals to try dangerous, evil terrorists in the US; precipitously close the Guantanamo prison; and a return to the failed policies of the past in treating the war on terror as a law enforcement problem. Finally, you have a platform to express the support of the American people for all those around the world seeking their freedom that God has bestowed within all mankind’s being – from Burma and Egypt to Russia and Venezuela – because the spread of liberty increases our own security. You, freshmen lawmakers, can and will be powerful voices in support of foreign policies that protect our interests and promote our values! Thank you for being willing to fight for our values and our freedom!

In all this, you should extend a hand to President Obama and Democrats in Congress. After this election, they may finally be prepared to work with Republicans on some of these issues for the good of the country. And if not, we will all be looking forward to 2012.

Remember that some in the media will love you when you stray from the time-tested truths that built America into the most exceptional nation on earth. When the Left in the media pat you on the back, quickly reassess where you are and readjust, for the liberals' praise is a warning bell you must heed. Trust me on that.

I and most Americans are so excited for you. Working together, we have every right to be optimistic about our future. We can be hopeful because real hope lies in the ingenuity, generosity, and boundless courage of the everyday Americans who make our country exceptional. These are the men and women who sent you to Washington. May your work and leadership honor their faith in you.

With sincere congratulations and a big Alaskan heart,

- Sarah Palin

SarahPAC: Get A Signed Copy of Sarah Palin's America by Heart

Monday, November 08, 2010 0 Responses
Last week, the American people sent a political shockwave through Washington! Conservatives prevailed all over the country and a record number of seats changed hands. A victory like this, for free-markets, limited government, and American exceptionalism, could not have happened without the help of grassroots volunteers, donors, and Patriots like you!
With the generous contributions of our wonderful donors, SarahPAC was able to support many worthy conservative candidates this election cycle. Out of the twenty Obamacare-voting Democrats identified on our Take Back the 20 website, 18 were defeated by conservative candidates with SarahPAC support. We are very humbled to have been a part of this historic wave election and we are confident that the new class of conservatives heading to Washington in January will go on to do great things for their constituents, and our nation.
In the wake of this conservative reawakening, we are excited to be able to give SarahPAC supporters the chance to receive a signed copy of America by Heart: Reflections on Family, Faith, and Flag with each contribution of $100. In this new book, Sarah sheds light on the roots of the faith and values that have shaped her outlook on everything from family to current events and the political world.
The contributions will be used to support our freshly-minted conservative officeholders as well as commonsense conservative candidates in the less visible, but vitally important run-offs, special elections, and off-year races in the coming months and years. Of course, donations of any amount are welcome and greatly appreciated!
Even though we can breathe a sigh of relief now that the People's House has been returned to its rightful owners, we still have a long, difficult road ahead to completely stop the damaging liberal agenda that is still being pushed in Washington.
Thank you for your support and congratulations on this great victory for America and those who love her!

Sarah Palin: Joe Miller is Ready to Win for Alaska!

Friday, August 20, 2010 0 Responses
Alaska is so full of potential for great private sector jobs and responsible resource development for the future of the Last Frontier – if only the federal government would stop its overreach and let Alaska thrive. We need a Senator who understands this and promises to stand up for Alaska and fight Washington’s liberal agenda. We’ll get that in Joe Miller!

We’re pleased to learn that recent poll results show the Alaska senate race between Joe Miller, a decorated Desert Storm war veteran, former judge, and proven Commonsense Conservative, and incumbent Lisa Murkowski is getting very close. Joe Miller has surged in the polls and is gaining strong momentum, while Lisa Murkowski has taken a big downward loss.

Constitutional Conservatives and Independent voters in Alaska have discovered what the far-left Huffington Post concluded and boasted – that Lisa Murkowski is a ”center-right Democrat.” Our country does not need another Democrat in the Senate voting for the Obama agenda which is bankrupting us. Alaska deserves a senator who will not talk one way in the Last Frontier and then vote the opposite way in the Beltway. It’s time for Alaskans who are concerned about endless bailouts, ever increasing debt and deficits, and the government take-over of health care (all planks Lisa Murkowski has walked) to get behind Joe Miller.

Alaskans are learning more about Joe. Here’s what we know: We know that Joe will not vote for amnesty for those who break our laws, but we know Lisa has already voted for amnesty – on May 25, 2006 on S. 2611, and voted against funding for the border fence. As Joe says: “It is a simple question. Are we a nation of laws? I believe we are. Therefore, the President must enforce our immigration laws as written and secure our borders, not sue the state of Arizona for acting where the federal government has failed to do so.”

We know Joe won’t support more bailouts, but we know Lisa already has. We know that Joe won’t vote for job-killing cap-and-tax legislation, but we know Lisa will because she co-sponsored a cap-and-trade bill and boasted of her commitment to “the issue of climate change” and carbon taxes.

We know Joe will vote to repeal Obamacare, but we know Lisa won’t because she said that repealing this government control of health care “is not the answer.”

And this is very important: we know that Joe can be counted on to vote with Commonsense Conservatives in the Senate, but we can’t count on Lisa because she has voted with Democrats over 300 times and Human Events rated her one of the top five “Senate RINOs.”

Joe may be the underdog in this fight (because by using the power of a politician’s incumbency after being given her Senate seat by her father, Lisa Murkowski has outspent Joe six to one), but Alaskans see through this and are recognizing Joe’s ability to be a real leader. Lisa Murkowski is endorsed by special interests and unions. Joe Miller is a man of the people, endorsed by the people. But as Alaska comes into its own, it’s important to remember that this election is not just about Alaska; it’s about our whole country. Remember, when it comes to the Senate, Alaska is just as important as California or New York. One vote is one vote. Our Alaska election affects the entire nation. That’s why good conservative leaders and organizations from around the country are looking at this race and have stepped up to endorse Joe – including Governor Mike Huckabee, Mark Levin, Lars Larson, Laura Ingraham, Red State, and the Tea Party Express.
Joe’s campaign needs to raise about $30,000 for a crucial final media buy. We can do it if we all pull together. Please go to Joe’s website at http://joemiller.us/ and donate to his campaign. Let’s raise $1,000 for each of the 30 years this senate seat has been locked in by the Murkowski family. The only way for our state to reach its potential, and to save our country, is to elect reformers who will fight for Alaska and all America and will stand up against the liberal Washington agenda.

Sarah Palin: Our Commonsense Conservative Cause Needs You

Tuesday, November 17, 2009 2 Responses
There are so many fundamental decisions that must be made in America to move us forward as a free, safe, and patriotic nation! I'm thankful tonight for what feels like a new beginning as we seize opportunities to help put America on the right path.
It's November 16th, and I've finished my book. I've told my story of how I got to where I am, and now I'm eager to move forward. And I want you to join me on the road ahead!
Our nation is at a critical crossroads, but the way forward is clear. Ronald Reagan showed us the way. He entered office during an economic recession even worse than our current one, but he left office after overseeing the largest peacetime economic expansion in American history. His policies worked! He charted the course for us.

C. S. Lewis once wrote: "We all want progress, but if you are on the wrong road, progress means doing an about-turn and walking back to the right road." We need to get back on the right road. In order to progress, we must return to our founding principles of limited government, fiscal responsibility, and strong national defense.

SarahPAC is dedicated to this!

We're going to work as Commonsense Conservatives for everyday, hardworking Americans by tackling issues that you care about and by helping candidates who will stand up for our nation. We'll help candidates (regardless of party) who have the courage to go to Washington or serve statewide and make the tough decisions needed to get our country back on track.

We can't do this alone - this effort needs good, commonsense Americans now more than ever. Please click here if you can assist with SarahPAC today.

SarahPAC supporters make it possible to get out there and fight for what we believe in. Please stand with us today. We won't let anyone tell us to sit down and shut up. We're going to stand up, stand together, and fight for what's right!

Thank you so much for your support and for your love of our country. My book, Going Rogue, is dedicated to you - to Patriots - who fight for freedom!

With an Alaska Heart,

Sarah Palin

P.S. We are going to be all across the country in the next few weeks. If you're able to contribute, click the button to go back to the SarahPAC homepage to see the schedule.

P.P.S. Any level of support is welcome! Our Commonsense Conservative cause needs you. As a special offer, on behalf of SarahPAC, we will send you a signed copy of Going Rogue for any donation of $100 or more.
Please know how grateful I am for your support.

Sarah Palin: NJ Gov Candidate Playing Loose With Facts

Sunday, November 01, 2009 1 Response
Despite what candidate Chris Daggett is claiming, I have never contacted him or his campaign. I have never asked him to drop out of the NJ Governor’s race. Now, if a politician is going to play loose with facts like this, the electorate needs to know it.

So, to the good people of
New Jersey, please know that Daggett’s claims are false. I’ve never even suggested he should drop out of the race. But, come to think of it…

Gallup Poll: Governor Sarah Palin Just Getting Started

Wednesday, October 21, 2009 1 Response
Governor Sarah Palin’s popularity is growing and growing.  First we see her impact on major issues like Health Care, Energy Policy, Afghanistan, and the economy all with simple Facebook postings.  We then see off the charts book sales, a price war between retail giants like Walmart, Amazon, Target, Barnes & Noble and Boarders and reports her book could save the slow sales season.  AMAZING!! She also has a commanding lead in most polls for 2012.

UPI and Gallup had this to say:
Poll: Edwards done, Palin may be starting.  Despite a decline in Palin's ratings, however, Gallup said her ability to stay in the news – particularly since her surprise resignation as Alaska's governor -- may allow her to move from being a vice presidential candidate in one election to being a presidential candidate in the next.

Palin went from a 53 percent rating right after her nomination as Arizona Sen. John McCain's running mate at the Republican National Convention to 42 percent at the time of the ticket's defeat at the polls in November. Her ratings have dropped an additional two percent since then, the poll indicted.

The poll results were based on telephone interviews conducted Oct. 1-4, 2009 with 1,013 national adults. The margin of error is plus or minus 4 percentage points. A typical small amount polled and not reflective of the overall population.

For those interested, I discovered a nice website: Reagan To Palin

The state of the dollar probably hasn’t been a first-tier political issue in the United States since, say, the presidential election of 1896. Back then, it manifested as whether or not America would stay on the gold standard or switch to a bimetallic one. (The William Jennings Bryan “cross of gold” speech and all that.)

The aftershocks of the global financial crisis may now be propelling the dollar back to the political forefront. The greenback’s continuing slide makes it a handy metric that neatly encapsulates America’s current economic troubles and possible long-term decline. House Republicans for instance, have been using the weaker dollar as a weapon in their attacks on the Bernanke-led Federal Reserve.

For more evidence of the dollar’s return to political salience, look no further than the Facebook page of Sarah Palin. The 2008 GOP vice presidential nominee — and possible 2012 presidential candidate — has shown a knack for identifying hot-button political issues, such as the purported “death panels” she claims to have found in Democratic healthcare reform plans. In a recent Facebook posting, Palin expressed deep concern over the dollar’s “continued viability as an international reserve currency” in light of huge U.S. budget deficits.

She might be onto something here, politically and economically. A recent Rasmussen poll, for instance, found that 88 percent of Americans say the dollar should remain the dominant global currency. Now, the average voter may not fully understand the subtleties of international finance nor appreciate exactly how a dominant dollar has benefited the U.S economy. But they sure think a weaker dollar is a sign of a weaker America.

And that’s the political problem for the Obama administration. Its benign neglect of the dollar is another example of an economic policy — along with TARP and the $787 billion stimulus — that the White House thinks is helping the economy, but many Americans find wrongheaded.

In his New York Times column today, Paul Krugman makes the usual case for a weaker dollar: It helps U.S. exporters and is a necessary part of a global economic rebalancing. And there is some truth in that, particularly the idea that Rising Asia will result in a less-dominant dollar. Then again, a devalued currency hasn’t exactly been a proven path to prosperity. (Ask Jimmy Carter.)

But Krugman too easily dismisses the idea that the dollar’s decline could tumble out of control. Former Clinton economic officials such as Robert Rubin and Roger Altman have been making the case that investor concern about budget deficits could lead them to abandon the dollar. As Altman argued in a Financial Times op-ed piece today: “The dismal deficit outlook poses a huge longer-term threat. Indeed, it is just a matter of time before global financial markets reject this fiscal trajectory. That could lead to a punishing dollar crisis.”
Now many Democrats and liberals, like Krugman, don’t want to hear such talk, fearing a rerun of the Clinton era when the progressive policy agenda was sacrificed on the altar of budgetary rectitude.
But that is a tremendous political and economic gamble, one that may result in taunting Republican cries of “Who lost the dollar?”

Palin Power Targets Dirty Harry Reid

Thursday, October 01, 2009 0 Responses
Sarah Palin’s father Chuck Heath will travel from Alaska to Nevada on October 2 to spend the weekend campaigning with Senate candidate Danny Tarkanian, one Republican hoping to unseat the Harry Leader next November.
The retired science teacher is scheduled to make five stops across Nevada with Tarkanian, the son of legendary college basketball coach Jerry Tarkanian. He is considered to be one of the frontrunners for the GOP nomination along with Nevada GOP chairwoman Sue Lowden, if she decides to formally enter the race.
Heath certainly won't bring out the kind of crowds that showed up to see his daughter during the presidential race, but he'll likely draw some of the Republican faithful eager to catch of glimpse of anything Palin-related.
Palin spokeswoman Meg Stapleton, relayed a message that Sarah Palin "loves 'Tark the Shark'" — the elder Tarkanian's nickname from his coaching days. She added that "the Governor is rooting for Senator Harry Reid's defeat."
It's not the first time Heath has hit the road to help a Republican candidate: In August, Heath traveled to his native Idaho to stump for Republican congressional candidate Vaughn Ward. Heath told the Idaho Statesman at the time that he was already planning an appearance with Tarkanian, but that he needed to delay his plans.
"He wanted to do it right away, but I gotta go moose hunting in September," Heath told the paper in August.
Stapleton said the two men met on the campaign trail last fall and that "the Heaths and Tarkanians obviously share love of conservative politics and sports."
