Governor Palin To The Bankrupt NY Times: There You Go Again

Friday, March 18, 2011 0 Responses
The New York Times just can’t seem to get much of anything right lately. No wonder they’re facing economic and reputation woes. Their article today falsely reporting on my record as governor is full of spin, and I shall call them out on it.

Regardless of the recent political posturing, ACES (Alaska’s Clear and Equitable Share) is a success for all stakeholders who want more domestic energy supplies for our great country. The Alaskan people (who collectively own the natural resources, via our state constitution), the resource producers who bid on the right to develop our oil and gas, and consumers all benefit under ACES. It incentivizes production and development. It works.

Amazingly, to the uninformed (or to those who really don’t want to incentivize oil exploration in America) ACES is spun to sound like an oil windfall profits tax and its progressivity is made to sound excessive. In reality, it was born of a need to have a tax structure that did three things:

1. It could not be created under a cloud of political corruption and self-dealing like the former Alaska administration and legislature’s PPT oil valuation structure. That’s a critical fact that is now frequently overlooked years later. Remember the legislators and oil industry players who went to jail because of bribes leading to votes in favor of the former administration’s PPT, which was unfairly tilted in favor of the resource producers against the resource owners (i.e., the people of Alaska)? Have we conveniently forgotten the fact that a corrupt process brought forth PPT, and I and others set out to change it by cleaning up the corruption?

2. It had to align the interests of Alaskans and the oil producers through exploration and production credits in partnership so that they benefit proportionally from commercialization of Alaska’s sovereign resources. This is very different from a government overtaxing personal or corporate income in which the government has no ownership stake in whatever it is that is being taxed.

3. It had to use a progressivity system that protects the producers from commercial strain when oil prices are low; otherwise the producers would seek development opportunities elsewhere. ACES does incentivize industry, but beware that Big Oil will always do what it does best for its shareholders: it will look out for its bottom line and always claim that it needs even more tax breaks. More power to them for trying, but resource owners deserve A CLEAR and EQUITABLE SHARE (ACES) of the value of their commonly-owned oil and gas.

ACES accomplished all three. The current criticism of this fair valuation makes no real sense. As an article at Big Government notes:

“The number of oil companies filing with the Alaska Department of Revenue has doubled indicating that competition has indeed increased. Alaska has the second most business friendly tax set-up — up two spots since the passage of ACES. Additionally, a report from Governor Parnell’s Department of Revenue indicated that 2009 yielded a record high in oil jobs. Even more recently, the newest employment numbers from Alaska show that oil job numbers were higher in January 2011 than in January 2010, indicating that jobs are growing at the seasonal level. Parnell argues that state revenues are in jeopardy, but it is estimated that his proposal would reduce revenues by $100-200 million.”

Most importantly, Alaska enjoys a $12 billion surplus thanks to ACES and the sound fiscal policies of my administration. It’s kind of amusing to see state legislators claim credit for the surplus when they didn’t vote for ACES and they cried to high heaven when I vetoed their wasteful spending.

Of course, I could have made a lot more friends in Juneau if I had spent the surplus. But I chose to put billions in savings for a rainy day and return a portion to the people of Alaska. (It was their money after all.) I paid down hundreds of millions of dollars into our under-funded pension plans, then set aside another billion to forward fund education. That’s sound fiscal policy. I’m proud of it, and Alaska is stronger today because of it.

Now, if others would like to claim credit for it, fine. As Ronald Reagan used to remind us: “There is no limit to what a man can do or where he can go if he doesn’t mind who gets the credit.”

But let’s not pretend that ACES wasn’t a key factor in the surplus, and let’s not pretend that it hasn’t been a success.

As for AGIA, it’s moving along according to plan.

(Video) Governor Palin: Follow Me There... to Afognak Island!

Saturday, December 25, 2010 0 Responses

Come along on another Alaskan adventure as we profile amazingly hard workers in the timber industry. Loggers are hearty and hardy, and the ones I know are true conservationists. I can’t wait for you to meet these lumberjacks!

During this Christmas season, do you ever wonder where you get many of your Christmas trees, firewood, packing boxes… shoot, just look around at everything timber touches and ask yourself who begins the production of these wood products? You’ll meet them on an exciting trip to an Afognak Island logging camp where our daughter learns even more about our family’s #1 lesson: tough work ethic and character will fulfill and sustain you.

Learn how the logging families live in such a remote part of God’s country and how they cherish the land that provides their livelihood. You’ll see how their reforestation efforts allow the forest regrowth rate to repeat a life cycle of new forest nearly every 20 years. These loggers actually care more about the sustainability of their forests than most anyone because they love their livelihood, they know America relies on our domestic timber industry for good jobs and economic security, they are inspired in the great outdoors, and many of them want their kids to get to grow up to be loggers. Basically, the good folks you’ll meet want to be allowed to do what they love to do and what anyone who lives among lumber and wood products rely on them to do for us.

In addition, come see Willow’s eyes open to a new rugged and rustic lifestyle. Her driving skills improve (?) before she undertakes a family’s rite of passage with an upcoming driver’s license test. Any parent can relate.

With only a couple more episodes to share, I promise you a fun and informative episode of “Sarah Palin’s Alaska” this Sunday night at 9pm ET/8c on TLC. Follow me there!

Michael Prell: Sarah Palin Fishing for American Exceptionalism

Monday, December 20, 2010 0 Responses
Watching "Sarah Palin's Alaska" is like stepping back in time -- not to a time when Americans lived off the land and the sea, but to a time when our desire to be #1 was celebrated and not scorned.
A recent episode of "SP's Alaska" was about Sarah Palin's oldest son Track trying to prove to his father Todd that he was worthy of taking over the #1 fishing site in Bristol Bay.  As Sarah Palin said, "Todd has the #1 site in this area...so Track has to work very, very hard and prove to Todd that he deserves to fish the #1 site." […]
Contrast President Obama's attitude about success to that of his biggest challenger, Sarah Palin, who said in TLC's "Alaska" that "[i]t's very important to remember that the more successful fisherman is going to be the harder-working fisherman.  The harder you work, the more money you're going to make, the more fish you're going to be able to pick.  That, again, is a life lesson that so many should, and could, be learning." […]
"Sarah Palin's Alaska" offers a more optimistic view of what it means to be #1.  Nine-year-old Piper proudly said, "I think I'm the best fish filleter in the whole third grade."  Husband Todd said, "There's competition amongst fishermen, and it's all healthy fun.  We all wish each other the best, but we have to have a little competitive spice throughout the summer."  Eldest son Track said, "I compete with my dad when it comes to fishing, because he's had some pretty big numbers over the years."  And a non-Palin crewman named Kaleb said, "Someday, Track and I hopefully will be able to pass Todd.  It's kinda one of those goals.  You wanna be the best."
All of this "exceptionalism" on screen, and in Sarah Palin's new book America by Heart (which devotes an entire chapter to American exceptionalism), has the media all "wee-wee'd up" to the point where they have revealed their latent Underdogma at last..........

Gov Sarah Palin: Follow Me There! (To Alaska!)

“They’re going to criticize me no matter what I do, so I might as well dance.” – Bristol Palin

Race car great Mario Andretti once said, “If everything’s under control then you’re going too slow.” In Alaska, we have two speeds in the summertime: fast and faster – that’s because Alaskan summers are so short and sweet. We always try to cram it all in before the leaves change and snow flies again. Seasons change so quickly up here that we’re full-speed ahead to capture every minute under the Midnight Sun doing what we love to do in the great outdoors.

Last summer my family documented our travels through Alaska so that the rest of America could see and experience our country’s young, independent, resource-rich Last Frontier.

From sliming salmon together at our family’s commercial fishing sites on the world’s largest salmon spawning grounds in Bristol Bay, to white water rafting in the wilds, searching for gold, climbing mountains, hunting wild game near rich oil fields, and watching mama bears protecting their cubs a mere stone’s throw away from my own, Alaska will be highlighted in a spectacular way in this eight-week TLC series called “Sarah Palin’s Alaska.” We’ll show you what inspires and motivates us: the grandeur of God’s creation, the satisfaction of a good day’s hard work, the rugged pioneering spirit that carves a life out of the wilderness and makes a living on the waters, the wisdom and traditions of our Alaska Natives, and the wealth of our natural resources which allows us to support ourselves and contribute to America’s security.

So, while traveling by bush planes, dog sleds, four-wheelers, trucks, and boom boats across the vast expanses of America’s largest state, my family documented Alaska to share it with other American families.

No doubt critics who seem to live to criticize will follow suit with this project. So be it. Todd and I are showing people our home state which we love, and we wanted to create the sort of family-friendly, uplifting, educational television that we like to watch with our kids. We made something that people could watch as a family, have fun discussing the project’s content, and maybe then decide that they want to head up to the Last Frontier and see the epic 49th state for themselves.

Americans are hungry for decent entertainment that doesn’t offend our sensibilities or insult our intelligence. So many parents are upset about all of the negative things on television. We’re often told to just turn off the TV, but let’s face it: turning it off doesn’t really shut it off. You can’t block out the world. Instead of turning the TV off, families usually end up making the most of what’s on – even if the message is anything but positive. The only real solution is to offer positive alternatives. That’s what we have done here. It’s my hope that these eight episodes will be just such a positive offering, and a tribute to Alaska, and a reminder of America’s pioneering spirit.

Sure, there will be the usual critics who still won’t understand why we would document the natural resources and uniqueness of the Last Frontier, though in doing this I am keeping my promise to fellow Alaskans that I would do all I could to support and promote Alaska. My answer to those naysayers is the reminder my daughter Bristol offered when she was blessed with the opportunity to participate on “Dancing with the Stars.” I cautioned Bristol about all the criticism she’d no doubt encounter. Bristol told me, “Mom, they’re going to criticize me no matter what I do, so I might as well dance!” Yes, they’ll criticize us no matter what, so I might as well climb and fly and trek and build and hunt and fish and share with you the awe-inspiring beauty of Alaska...and because I wanted my family along for the ride, I want your family to come along, too. Follow me there!

Please tune in Sunday at 9:00 pm (8:00 pm central). The show’s opening lyrics sing the invitation: “Come on and follow me there...to my sanctuary! Follow me there!”

Sarah Palin: Americans will benefit from watching her upcoming documentary Sarah Palin’s Alaska

"We're going to be showing off the beauty and the uniqueness and the ruggedness of Alaska and our natural environment and the characters who live up there and make their living," she told reporters at the TIME 100 gala Wednesday night. "It's going to be a good thing for the rest of America to see."
While giving a toast at the gala's reception, Sarah Palin revealed some crib notes she wrote in the palm of her hand, referring to the actual crib notes she had written on her hand during a Q&A following a speech she gave at the Tea Party Convention in Tennessee.
