Celebrating IGHL’s third decade of service, the 30th Anniversary IGHL Foundation Gala scheduled for June 7 at Flowerfield in Saint James will honor Governor Palin of Alaska.
Governor Palin is a mother who has set a fine example on the national stage for families having children with developmental disabilities. As a mother with a Down Syndrome child, Governor Palin has become a symbol to families who are coping with their own children’s special needs. These families look to leaders such as Governor Palin for compassionate attention to the educational and therapeutic programs that are improving their own youngsters chances for learning. IGHL applauds the Governor for her concern for children with disabilities.
In her recent State of the State address, Governor Palin addressed those concerns, saying:
“One of the great privileges given to me last year was the chance to be a witness for the truth that every child has value; to say to special needs children that they are beautiful and loved. And needed. We learn more from them than they learn from us. Across America, great change is coming in public policy affecting these children, and Alaska can lead the way. This is part of the culture of life where every child is cherished and protected.”
These are sentiments that everyone, regardless of their political beliefs and party affiliation, would agree with. Governor Palin’s advocacy for people who are developmentally disabled can have a positive influence on government strategy and funding for programs such as IGHL’s. Raising the visibility of families of children with special needs is something IGHL supports. Governor Palin’s appearance will help accomplish the goal of increasing public awareness and of the necessity of increased funding and support .
According to Walter W. Stockton, Chief Executive Officer of IGHL, Governor Palin’s advocacy for the rights of people with developmental disabilities is the reason for her designation as an honoree.
“One of the problems in our community is that because so many parents are home caring for their children who are disabled, few can speak for them politically. Sarah Palin is the mother of a child with Downs Syndrome who has stepped up and become a nationally known advocate for the families of children with developmental disabilities. I am certain that her appearance at our gala will help ensure the success of this important fundraising event.”

Gov. Sarah Palin has signed a book deal with HarperCollins Publishers for what is described as her memoir.
"There have been so many things written and said through mainstream media that have not been accurate, and it will be nice through an unfiltered forum to get to speak truthfully about who we are and what we stand for and what Alaska is all about," Palin said in an interview today in which she announced the deal.
Palin and HarperCollins would not say how much she was being paid. Asked why, the former Republican nominee for vice president said she didn't want to distract from the substance of the book.

"The idea is to focus on the content of the book and what's coming in terms of me being able to tell my story unrestrained and unfiltered," Palin said.
Palin hired Robert Barnett, a Washington, D.C., lawyer who is one of the most powerful figures in book publishing, to negotiate the deal for her memoir. His past deals reportedly include $12 million for Bill Clinton's memoir and an $8.5 million advance for Alan Greenspan.

Anchorage, Alaska - Governor Palin welcomes all U.S. & international Interstate Oil & Gas Compact Commission (IOGCC) members in Anchorage for their midyear conference!
IOGCC and its member states have a well-established history of balancing the production of our nation's oil and gas resources with environmental protection through effective regulation. They are holding their Midyear Issues Summit from May 11 - 13, 2009 thanks to Governor Palin.

EAGLE, Alaska -- Governor Palin landed here Monday afternoon to survey damage from spring flooding caused by ice jams on the Yukon River that pushed water and chunks of ice into town.
Nearby, Old Eagle Village was hit the hardest. Wiped out by the flood, the village remains buried under the crushing ice. The road to town, most of the homes, and the village's church and graveyard are no longer visible.

The homes that can be found are far away from their foundations -- pushed off, tipped, torn apart -- and the crushed and tilted cabins have become angular landmarks on a new landscape carved by the river's force.
The community's health clinic still stands, but is badly damaged. Residents learned Sunday night that the road, also swallowed by the ice, won't be clear any time soon. Because of hazardous materials worries and a desire to not plow through people's personal possessions, the state Department of Transportation is calling for a slow approach. To link the village with the larger and nearby town of Eagle, crews will instead build a temporary road, cutting through the trees and using specialized pads to protect the tundra.
