Latest Ethics Complaint Deemed Outrageous April 22, 2009, Juneau, Alaska – The Office of the Governor today expressed outrage that yet another baseless ethics complaint has been filed as part of an alarming new development in Alaska politics.

“In the past several months, we have seen an orchestrated effort by the governor’s opponents to make differences of opinion and ideology almost criminal,” said Mike Nizich, the governor’s chief of staff. “Governor Palin has spent a considerable amount of time and money fighting ethics complaints – and no charge has been substantiated. I hope that the publicity-seekers will face a backlash from Alaskans who have a sense of fair play and proportion. I served six previous governors, and I’ve never seen anything like the attacks against Governor Palin.”

The latest ethics complaint against the governor alleges that she entered into a “contract” outside of her official duties in regard to a political action committee and that her recent trip to Indiana also conflicted with those duties.

“These allegations are categorically false and ridiculous, and are an abuse of the Executive Ethics Act,” Nizich said.

It will be interesting to see if something longer lasting can grow from what we saw on April 15. The next step is to coalesce into a cohesive organization, rather like the Sons of Liberty in the 1760s. And as for leadership, I hesitate to even begin to guess at this embryonic stage, but if the evaluation criteria are being despised by the establishment and having a willingness to fight, there is only one name presently on the public scene that comes close to fitting both bills – Alaska Governor Sarah Palin.

Much like the aforementioned example, it may come down to one simple thing: We cannot spare this woman – she fights.

In an unusual reversal of past legislative practice, the recently completed session saw the Legislature and the governor compete to cut projects from the state's capital budget.
The capital budget typically grows while moving through the process, as legislators add support for items relative to their districts.
This year, even as the state's financial picture got brighter, the cuts got deeper. Among the casualties to Juneau was $9.5 million for renovations to the Johnson Youth Center, and the chance at $150 million in federal matching money.
Sen. Stedman, R-Sitka, said the Legislature had no choice, given the budget Governor Palin submitted and the declining price of oil.
"The capital budget was large, a couple of billion dollars, and quite frankly the state couldn't afford it," he said.
The budget was about $2.3 billion. By the time it got through Governor Palin and Senate Finance Committee, it was a half billion dollars lighter.

People have made careers poking fun at Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin. But no one was laughing this week as Palin opened up about one of the hardest decisions of her life: the birth of her son Trig, who was diagnosed with Down syndrome.
When the pro-life Palin revealed during a speech at a right-to-life luncheon that she had twice considered having an abortion, it made the maverick-quoting governor of Alaska quickly turn into a more realistic woman than a caricature.
She said that, after tests showed the baby's blood had abnormalities, she considered having an abortion because no one would have known.
"Oh, dear God, I knew, I had instantly an understanding for that fleeting moment why someone would believe it could seem possible to change those circumstances," she said during her speech. "Just make it all go away and get some normalcy back in life. Just take care of it."
Her bravery in admitting her weakness to a crowd that is pro-life speaks volumes about the type of woman Palin is. Her struggle gives validation to every woman who has felt guilt over the decision to keep her baby. Palin's decision was expected.
The abortion debate has become more political than emotional and within that shift is lost the struggles of women like Palin. Regardless of which side of the issue she lands on, her real life story brings humanity to a heated issue.
